DECANTER PRESENTS... Remírez de Ganuza

Remírez de Ganuza Past, Present and Future

Founded in 1989, Remírez de Ganuza was born with a fundamental principle at its core: valuing the quality of grapes hailing from some of Rioja Alavesa’s oldest vineyards. Each Remírez de Ganuza wine is an expression of terroir and vintage and a tribute to all those who, for generations, have tended to this singular landscape, making it an invaluable, living viticultural heritage.

Low-yielding plots in six different villages at the foot of Sierra Cantabria provide the raw material for a range of wines that combine modernity with classicism. Some of them have indeed become true modern classics, setting the benchmark for what the future of Rioja should look like while paying tribute to the tradition and history it is founded upon.

This tasting will guide attendees through Remírez de Ganuza flagship wines - including a mini-vertical of its iconic Reserva - and most recent addition to its portfolio. A unique opportunity to understand how the producer's commitment to quality and innovation translates into some of Rioja's most sought-after modern classics.

THE HOSTS

Jose Ramón Urtasun

 Owner
Remírez de Ganuza

Jose Ramón Urtasun is the owner of Remírez de Ganuza. With a background in Environmental Science, he entered the world of wine almost by accident when his family became involved in the business in 2010. Over time, Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza evolved into his life project. Today, Jose oversees every detail at the winery, personally managing its commercial, marketing and production strategies alongside a small but dedicated team. Among his priorities are maintaining the quality of the wines, ensuring they enjoy long ageing in barrel and bottle, and never releasing them to the market prematurely. He has also made a point of releasing small batches of exceptional wines, including the Blanco Gran Reserva Olagar; Iraila, the winery’s first Garnacha; and UV, crafted from a single plot of Tempranillo.

As export manager, it is not unusual to find him in different corners of the world, leading tastings, attending fairs and participating in wine events.
